Edward Varner family papers, 1730-1965

This collection consists of the papers of the family of Edward Varner, primarily of Butts County, Georgia. However, other records in the collection are from Putnam, Jasper, Dooly, Coweta, Spalding, and other counties. These papers concern family and personal matters, social life and business interests. Included is Josephine Varner's (1837-1928) Civil War diary, 1862. Of special interest are the Indian Springs records, 1855-1948, concerning the history of Indian Springs, the Varner House, the Foy Hotel, the Elder Hotel, General William McIntosh and the Treaty of Indian Springs, 1825. Also included in the collection are some of the papers of the family of Ann Gray of Crawford and Houston Counties, who married Clinton L. Varner; papers of the family of William L. Gordon, whose daughter Addie married John Clark Varner; and papers of Birdie Varner Sanders of Newnan, daughter of Addie and John Clark Varner. Mrs. Sanders was responsible for the collection of many of the Varner family .papers and the compilation of some of the family history.

Edward Varner (1790-1869) of Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia married Emma Dent. Their children included Early (b. 1816), Ann Eliza (1817-1818), Samuel Dent (1820-1868), and Frederick Augustus (b. 1822). Emma Dent Varner died in 1822. Edward Varner ran a general store in Eatonton, some of the account books of which are located in this collection. The Central Rail Road and Canal Company was organized in 1833 by a group of Savannah businessmen. In 1835, its name changed to Central Rail Road and Banking Company of Georgia.
